Work Experience
Progressive Work Experience
As a software engineer I developed full application systems, was part of large and small teams, and also worked as an independent consultant. I worked independently, as a team member and as project manager building a variety of applications on a variety of platforms for a variety of industries, including business, military, and K12 education.
After a decade of progressive work starting as a computer programmer, then software systems analyst, computer science instructor at a junior college, manager and entrepreneur, I decided to focus the remainder of my career on improving the instructional design of educational software. This included graduate school, a post-doc with the Air Force Research Laboratory, consulting work with multiple military branches, and eventually starting a research company and completing a research contract funded directly by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, administered by the Office of Naval Research. Consulting work included a two year project for the Defense Acquisition University, helping automate one of their most popular courses, Intermediate Systems Acquisition 201. This only multi-media course development project was successful and has been taken by over 100,000 DoD personnel. The following are some student comments on this hybrid classroom and computer-based course in military systems acquisition; I was lead designer for the course: "Really liked the combination of CBT (computer-based training) and in-class training." For a brief review of the Instructional Design methodology I use in the design of training and educational information systems, along with short descriptions of some of my past projects, check out the Instructional Design Consulting White Paper.

Educational Software
During my postdoc years with AFRL, I conducted a design experiment to find ways to improve writing instruction. See the publications from those studies in my research section.
For details about the general method I use for instructional courseware development projects, check out the ISRD Expert Design Method White Paper. |
