About Kurt Rowley
Biography
I am a retired software engineer, instructional designer and researcher. My primary research focus at the present is topics related to the use of systems thinking to solve complex training problems in multiple fields. I look for opportunities to 'make a difference' by using systems thinking.
My work experience started with a BA in Economics, followed by a year-long certificate training program with work experience in COBOL programming for banking applications. This started a love of software applications and a decade as an IT professional developing business software systems. During this time I worked several years as a part-time college instructor teaching computer programming, systems architecture, and business management. I also started a software business to create a campground reservation system, under contract with the Utah State Parks. After a park system in California purchased the system, I sold the business to a competitor and decided to focus on educational computing. That reservation system was later sold to www.ReserveAmerica.com, which is now the largest state and regional camping reservation service in the US. To start this career change I earned a PhD in Instructional Systems from Florida State University (1995), then worked as a Dept. of Defense researcher and instructional designer in San Antonio, Texas and Northern Virginia for another decade.
My software background includes work in many programming languages including SQL database environments and various authoring tools. I have designed and developed software on all levels of computers including IBM Mainframes, UNIX systems, as well as PC/Mac/Linux, and Web-based platforms. My instructional design and teaching background includes training computer programmers, teaching business classes, teaching instructional psychology as an adjunct professor (Boise State University), designing K12 instructional software and training teachers to use the software in their classrooms, designing graduate-level blended e-learning/platform courses for a DoD University, and conducting research programs in the areas of K12 education and military training systems. My business background includes founding and operating two software companies, a research firm and a nonprofit institute.
I am currently retired and my time and availability is limited to hobby projects. However I am continuing to apply what I have learned to a few specific problems related my earlier research topics, as well as health and wellness.
